The Al-Jbessa gas export pipeline was targeted in an explosion in southern Hasakah countryside in Syria on Thursday, causing a fire to break out along the pipeline. The relevant authorities began monitoring developments and taking measures to contain the impact. Adi al-Satouf, director of the media office at the Syrian Petroleum Company, told the Syrian Arab News Agency SANA that the attack took place in the Arabidi area, about 60 kilometres from the city of al-Shaddadi.
Explosion site cordoned off and surrounding valves closed
Al-Satouf added that the area had been cordoned off and the sectional valves located before and after the site of the attack had been closed, while firefighting, security and safety teams secured the surrounding area. He said the measures were part of the relevant authorities’ efforts to monitor developments, deal with the explosion and limit its impact.
In a previous incident, the oil-products transport pipeline running from Baniyas to Homs was subjected to an act of sabotage in the Hadida area, when a hole was made in the pipeline. This caused the oil product to leak and led to the closure of the Homs–Tartus motorway in both directions, with traffic diverted to alternative routes.
The Syrian Petroleum Company and civil defence teams began repairing the oil-products pipeline after closing the valves before and after the site of the attack, with the aim of stopping the flow of the oil product and limiting its spread.
