Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that negotiations with the United States were continuing through intermediaries, explaining that Tehran was reviewing the US position on a seven-point Iranian plan and would provide its response within days. In remarks made on 8 October 2026, Araghchi said that messages were still being exchanged between the two sides through mediation channels.
Iranian plan and US response under review
He added that Iran had presented its plan and heard the US response, and that the relevant authorities were currently studying the position put forward by Washington. The Iranian plan concerns a proposal to settle outstanding issues and fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran had conveyed the proposal to the US side through intermediaries before receiving a response and counterproposals from Washington.
Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said that the United States had agreed to some of the seven conditions put forward by Tehran, but that other points still required clarification. Rezaei described the US response as insufficient, saying that Iran was awaiting clarification on issues that remained unclear.
Deadly attacks hit Riyadh airport
The continuation of indirect contacts comes as the region faces simultaneous escalation on several fronts, particularly after attacks that the Houthis claimed responsibility for, targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and other facilities inside Saudi Arabia. The attack on Riyadh airport on Saturday 10 October killed 13 people and injured more than 300, according to the latest announced figures.
The airport was also subjected to a new attack the following day, killing one person and injuring about 11 others, according to Saudi authorities. During a phone call with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Sunday evening, Araghchi expressed Tehran’s concern over rising tensions in the region. He warned that continued reliance on military actions and the neglect of the political track would further complicate the situation.
Araghchi expressed Iran’s readiness to help launch talks between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis and support efforts to reach a political settlement. He stressed that regional crises could not be resolved through military means, calling for political and diplomatic solutions to be given priority.
For its part, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said that the call between the two ministers discussed developments in the regional escalation and efforts to address it.
The call took place amid continued attacks on Saudi airports and civilian facilities, alongside renewed military operations and strikes in Yemen.
