Tensions have escalated in the Strait of Hormuz in recent days, while Iran and the United States continue to hold to their positions despite the ongoing negotiating process and the exchange of messages through intermediaries, amid disagreements over Tehran’s conditions for reopening the waterway.

Tehran reviews US proposals through intermediaries

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday that the exchange of messages with the United States through intermediaries was continuing, explaining that Pakistan and Qatar were continuing to mediate. He added that Tehran was reviewing US proposals on negotiations and that any talks would require Iran’s preconditions to be taken into account.

The previous day, Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, described the US response to his country’s seven conditions as “inadequate”. He said Washington had agreed to some of the conditions, while other issues remained unclear.

He added that US contacts had taken place over the past two months through Pakistan, Qatar and Iraq. The contacts are continuing amid rising tensions over the situation in the strait, with disagreement persisting over the conditions for reopening it and the understandings required to continue negotiations between the two sides.
