US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Greenland is of “unparalleled” importance to ensuring the security of the United States and Europe, noting that the island, located in the Arctic Circle, would serve as a site for countering any future attack targeting his country.
Trump links Greenland to US and European security
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that Greenland’s importance was linked to the security needs of the United States and Europe, both defensively and offensively. He added that any future attacks on the United States would have to pass through the island.
The US president said the defences in Greenland would systematically shoot down drones and missiles, along with “any other form of weapon that has not yet been invented”, underscoring the role he assigns to the island in US and European security planning.
In the same context, Trump announced that preparations were under way to launch what he described as “massive” oil, gas and mineral exploration operations in Greenland. He provided no further details about the operations, particularly the level of US involvement. Trump said: “Preparations are under way to begin massive oil, gas and mineral exploration operations in our new and wonderful region, Greenland.”
He added that the amount of oil available there could be accessed far more easily than in almost anywhere else in the world, as he put it.
