The overall toll from Israeli attacks in Lebanon from 8 October 2023 through Saturday rose to 8,953 deaths and 30,660 injuries, according to a Lebanese statement on the number of casualties recorded during that period. Israel began launching intensive attacks on Lebanese areas on 2 March, after Hezbollah fired rockets towards northern Israel.
Deployment of Israeli forces and the first truce
During the operations, Israeli forces took control of several towns in southern Lebanon. Israeli air raids continued across wide areas of southern Lebanon and the Bekaa region in the east of the country, despite the announcement of a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel on 16 April.
The agreement was extended on 23 April for three weeks, before being extended again on 15 May for 45 days. On 20 June, a new ceasefire was announced, followed by a decline in the frequency of Israeli strikes.
However, the raids intensified again in recent weeks, after successive periods of announced de-escalation and extensions that did not completely halt attacks on areas of the south and the Bekaa.
