Harry Kane equalled the record for appearances for the England men's team after winning his 125th cap and leading his side to a 3-0 victory over Czechia on Tuesday 6 October 2026 at Wembley in the Nations League. The Bayern Munich striker and England captain drew level with former goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who won 125 caps between 1970 and 1990.

Kane is now one appearance away from holding the record outright, ahead of the meeting with Croatia at Wembley on 12 November, followed by a match against Spain in Madrid three days later. Kane combined the individual achievement with an outstanding attacking performance in his landmark match, scoring twice and contributing to the opener when Czech defender Vladimír Coufal turned his cross into his own net.

Kane added the second from a Morgan Rogers cross before half-time, then completed the scoring with a header from a corner taken by Lewis Hall. The brace took Kane to 91 international goals in 125 appearances, strengthening his position as England's all-time leading scorer, 38 goals clear of second-placed Wayne Rooney, who scored 53.

Kane also leads the scoring charts in this edition of the Nations League with six goals. He described the match as a “perfect night” for himself and the team, and said he was proud to complete the occasion at Wembley. He said the move that produced his first goal, involving quick passing from Elliot Anderson to Rogers followed by a direct cross, provided an example of the performance the team are seeking to produce.

Shilton congratulates Kane on equalling record

Shilton congratulated the England captain on reaching the mark, saying he appreciated the dedication and work Kane had needed to reach 125 international appearances. Shilton made his England debut against East Germany in November 1970 and played in five major tournaments before retiring from international football after the 1990 World Cup.

Kane's appearances comprise 27 Nations League matches, 22 World Cup qualifiers, 21 European Championship qualifiers and 19 friendlies, plus 36 matches in the finals of the World Cup and European Championship. The England captain has played in eight major tournaments since beginning his international career.

Tuchel and Bellingham praise Kane's consistent performances, attacking and defensive ability and leadership within England

Manager Thomas Tuchel said Kane's performances were “exceptional in every match”, adding that he did not take his level for granted. Tuchel's victory over Czechia was his 20th in 26 matches with England, making him the fastest manager to reach that number of wins. Jude Bellingham praised the captain, describing him as the best player to have worn an England shirt and saying it was an honour to play alongside him.

He added that Kane continues to score, create chances and track back to contribute defensively, saying his level continues to improve despite the length of his international career.

The victory gave England a third consecutive win in the competition after they lost their opening match 3-2 to Spain, then beat Czechia in the first meeting and thrashed Croatia 7-0 away. England will finish their group-stage campaign against Croatia and Spain in November as they seek to qualify for the finals.
