Trump dismisses lengthy deployment
Speaking to reporters before heading to New York, Trump rejected the notion that the carrier’s eight-and-a-half-month stay at sea was excessive, saying in response to a question on the matter: “No, no, no. It wasn’t nearly long enough.”
That ship is moving now, or will be moving very soon, and it will be replaced by another very similar vessel.
Concerns among sailors’ families and Congress
Trump’s remarks came despite concerns expressed by sailors’ families and members of Congress about mental health and deteriorating conditions aboard the carrier, as its naval mission has continued for more than eight months.
More than 200 consecutive days at sea
The Abraham Lincoln left its home port in San Diego last November, before later being directed to the Middle East to support U.S. military operations in the war with Iran. The carrier has a crew of about 5,000 sailors and Marines.
The ship has not docked at any port for more than 200 days, setting a modern record for the number of consecutive days at sea, according to U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, the Democratic member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
