The Israeli army announced on Thursday that an officer had been killed and five soldiers injured in two separate incidents in southern Lebanon. One involved a military vehicle overturning, while the other was linked to improper use of ammunition, according to the Israeli account. In a statement, the army said the officer was killed “when a military Humvee overturned” in southern Lebanon.

Further injuries in the ammunition incident

It added that the same incident injured three soldiers, who were then taken to hospital for treatment, without specifying the nature of their injuries. In a separate incident, Israel’s public broadcaster reported that two other Israeli soldiers sustained minor injuries in what it described as “an additional operational incident” in southern Lebanon. The broadcaster said the incident occurred because of “improper use of ammunition”.

Beirut and Tel Aviv signed a US-sponsored agreement in Washington on 26 June, providing for a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and the deployment of the Lebanese army in areas from which Israeli forces withdraw. Despite the agreement, Israel continued its attacks on southern Lebanon, while its forces remained in several Lebanese areas, some of which had been under their control for decades, while others were taken over during recent wars and military operations.
