South Korean President Lee Jae-myung announced the successful first launch test of a domestically developed hypersonic missile, days after North Korea announced a similar missile test, the South Korean presidential office said on Thursday. Lee oversaw the missile launch and expressed his pride in the test's success.

Today, the first launch test of a hypersonic missile that we developed using our own technology was successful

The South Korean announcement came after a test announced by Pyongyang last Saturday of a medium-range ballistic missile using artificial intelligence, in North Korea's latest missile launch this year.

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said the missile could change its flight path while flying at low altitude as a result of incorporating artificial intelligence technology. South Korea had announced that it detected the launch hours before Pyongyang announced it, saying it was working with the United States to analyse the test and determine its details.

South Korea's National Security Council also held an emergency meeting to assess the situation, as coordination and intelligence-sharing with the United States and Japan were strengthened.
