Around 10 people were injured in a drone attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the United States to take strong action to pressure Russia and end the war, accusing Moscow of prolonging it and continuing to target Ukrainian energy facilities. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that around 10 people were injured in the attack.

Details of the attack on the residential building in Kyiv

He added that the drone struck a 25-storey residential building in the eastern part of the city, which has a population of 3 million, and that several cars caught fire. Commenting on the attack, Zelenskyy wrote on social media: “This is further proof that Russia must face greater pressure,” saying that Moscow was working to prolong the war.

The Ukrainian president added: “We are counting on the United States to recognise these signals from Russia and act forcefully. Strength is needed to force Russia to end this war.” On Sunday, Zelenskyy accused Russia of targeting energy facilities inside Ukraine, after US President Donald Trump made a surprise announcement that Kyiv and Moscow had agreed to halt reciprocal attacks on energy infrastructure.

Zelenskyy said on Facebook, after a conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen: “The Russians struck a power station in Kyiv, and later, strikes targeted energy facilities in the Kharkiv region. All of this happened after the US president made his statement about a ceasefire in the energy sector.”

Trump announces truce for energy facilities

Trump’s announcement came as a surprise to Kyiv and the European countries that his administration had sought to pressure. The US president wrote on his Truth Social platform: “As of now, there is a truce in the energy sector in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have agreed. Do not violate it!”

Zelenskyy’s office, however, said it was not aware of any such agreement, while it was not immediately clear whether Russia had agreed to it. Shortly before Trump’s announcement, Zelenskyy renewed his call for a truce covering the energy sector and also requested a 60-day ceasefire to hold elections.
