The Criminal Division of the Tunis Court of First Instance sentenced three defendants to prison terms ranging from 20 to 30 years after convicting them of bringing more than 4 kilograms of cocaine into Tunisia and smuggling it through Tunis-Carthage International Airport.
Hiding the shipment under their clothes
According to details of the case, the defendants divided up the cocaine and strapped it under their clothes in an attempt to evade inspection procedures, but customs officers and security teams discovered the shipment at the airport.
The investigation, according to published reports, found that the incident was linked to an international smuggling network. The Public Prosecutor’s Office referred the three defendants to court on charges of “forming an association to bring narcotics into and smuggle them into Tunisian territory.”
Moves to combat drug networks
The sentences come amid Tunisian security efforts to combat drug-smuggling and distribution networks.
