The Sudanese army announced on Monday, 5 October 2026, that its air defences had shot down an FH-95 drone in West Kordofan state, bringing to six the number of drones of the same type it said it had downed in the Kordofan region in less than a month.
Drone shot down north-west of Al-Khwei
In a brief statement, the army said its air defences had shot down an “enemy drone” on Monday morning north-west of Al-Khwei in West Kordofan state. The statement did not identify the party that launched the drone it said had been shot down. The army had previously announced that it had shot down five FH-95 drones in North Kordofan state, saying the latest operation of this kind had taken place on 27 September.
The FH-95 is a Chinese-made drone designed to carry out a range of tasks, including reconnaissance, surveillance and electronic warfare, and can remain airborne for more than 12 hours. Parts of the Kordofan region are witnessing clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces as part of the war that has continued in the country since mid-April 2023.
The two sides trade accusations of targeting sites and facilities in combat areas. The Rapid Support Forces control all five states in the Darfur region, while parts of North Darfur and West Darfur remain under army control. The army, meanwhile, holds sway over most of Sudan’s other states, including the capital, Khartoum.
The war, which has continued for more than three years, has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced about 13 million, amid a large-scale humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
