Fighting continued between Yemen’s government forces and Ansar Allah (the Houthis) on several fronts, alongside airstrikes and battlefield shifts in western and northern provinces. The International Organization for Migration said the fighting had displaced more than 82,000 people since the beginning of September, amid obstacles to delivering aid to those affected.
The National Resistance announced that more than 500 of its members were killed and around 1,500 wounded in battles with the Houthis on Yemen’s western coast between August 9 and September 10. The Yemeni armed forces announced plans to target any Houthi military movements around Mocha and urged civilians to avoid the Taiz-Mocha road. The announcement coincided with the redeployment of government forces along the western coast, directives to reorganize them and establish an alternative command center, and movements and reinforcements on several fronts.
The Houthis said shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait was safe and regular as Yemen’s coastal areas experience a military escalation. No independent data was available from the sources reviewed to confirm the status of vessel traffic or the volume of passage through the waterway.
The European Union called on the Houthis to halt attacks inside Yemen, on Saudi Arabia and against commercial ships in the Red Sea, warning that they undermine regional security and peace efforts. It said recent attacks in the south of the kingdom injured 73 civilians, while UN envoy Hans Grundberg warned that the conflict could expand.
