Jonathan the tortoise’s genes reveal new indicators of resistance to ageing
Researchers identified 287 genetic variants in Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal, linked to cell protection, DNA repair and reduced inflammation. The study found that his mitochondria remained efficient despite his exceptional age, while the team prepares to investigate drugs that could improve their performance before possible clinical trials in humans.
