A guide to climbing Acatenango to see Fuego’s lava in Guatemala
The Acatenango trek near Antigua combines camping at an altitude of about 3,500 metres with daytime and nighttime views of eruptions from the active Fuego volcano. The most common itinerary takes two days and one night, but requires preparation for a strenuous ascent, cold temperatures and reduced oxygen, with an optional trail bringing hikers to within less than one kilometre of the eruption zone.
